2012 Calendar Week 4, January 23rd

This site lists the Internet resources, software, search engines etc. which the author finds the most useful. The idea is to present with a short description only the arguably very best findings in various categories. The criteria for inclusion are:

  • Usability


  • Free availability (only freeware, where downloads are concerned)


  • Ease of handling (no IT expertise required)

The Internet will be continuously monitored for new developments, but of the hundreds of findings within a week only a few, if none at all for individual weeks may be included here.

To a given domain name an expression of choice can be added after the slash to form a new URL. Then a clipboard appears where any text and only text can be pasted, edited and saved. The Url can then be looked up anywhere on any PC. A too simple addition after the slash may be ambiguous or may be read by people who are not supposed to read it. 123 is not recommended as can be clearly seen when entered. This software provides a platform to "Create mind maps for brainstorming, problem solving, rational analysis, and decision marking." In this blog the journalist Brian Krebs gives detailed information on the threats hidden on the Internet and in some cases on the brains behind them. This a selection of installations to suppress the sometimes unwanted comments to a blog or any other dynamic Internet site. However, it is the bookmarklet which is the last item on the page that is recommended here. This database checks 81 blacklists to see whether a given IP address is a spam source. This may be particularly useful when buying on the Internet from unknown sources. If only a URL is known, it must be converted to the IP-address for example with the Online Url-IP Converter or any other reverse IP lookup tool.
