WEB CROPS WEEKLY

2009 Calender Week 46, November 9th

This site lists the Internet resources, software, search engines etc. which the author finds the most useful. The idea is to present with a short description only the arguably very best findings in various categories. The criteria for inclusion are:

  • Usability

  • Free availability (only freeware, where downloads are concerned)

  • Ease of handling (no IT expertise required)

The Internet will be continuously monitored for new developments, but of the hundreds of findings within a week only a few, if none at all for individual weeks may be included here.

This week's crops:

Type: Tool (Download) Type: Tool (Download) Type: Firefox Addon (Download) Type: Files (Download) Type: Firefox Addon (Download)
Moo0 Image Thumbnailer CombiMovie Add to Search Bar Free Calendars Update Scanner
Image resizer/thumbnailer which unlike others does not give blurred results. An image chosen for resizing has to be dragged onto the tool. Then the resizing is done in the background leaving a folder called thumbnail for image and small image in the chosen storage drive or folder. Batch resizing of several images and choice of new size are possible. This is a videoclip joiner. Digital cameras often allow only short clips. Several of them can be joined with this tool. The download is on the bottom of the link page. The search bar or search box in the Firefox browser allows to add search engines from a directory linked to at the bottom of the bar's pulldown. The addon, however, makes it possible to add any SE not listed in the directory to the search bar. This is facilitated by navigating the cursor to a search engine's query box, right click and select the then present "add to search bar" command. Instantly the SE is added. As the year draws to a close, here is an offer of customizable calendars for various uses. They are either in EXCEL or PDF formats. With this tool a URL can be scanned for updates at set intervals. This is useful for those who do not want e-mail alerts or RSS-feeds for updates. The result is a small pop up on the status bar for an update which then can be double clicked for viewing.
