WEB CROPS WEEKLY

2009 Calender Week 43, October 19th

This site lists the Internet resources, software, search engines etc. which the author finds the most useful. The idea is to present with a short description only the arguably very best findings in various categories. The criteria for inclusion are:

  • Usability

  • Free availability (only freeware, where downloads are concerned)

  • Ease of handling (no IT expertise required)

The Internet will be continuously monitored for new developments, but of the hundreds of findings within a week only a few, if none at all for individual weeks may be included here.

This week's crops:

Type: Mass Downloader (Download) Type: Tool Download) Type: Tool (Download) Type: Search Engine Gateway Type: Online Service

also called an offline-browser; it is a mirroring tool which will permit downloading a complete website with all its contents; variable settings allow for different filters and speed via number of channels; care must be taken not to choose to many channels, as then either the target-server or one's own PC might collaps. It also would be a good idea to contact the owner of a site before downloading. This is a Firefox Addon which will upon mousehover open a little configureable pop-up which offers a choice of various search engines to perform a search for a highlighted text in a browser window or a Microsoft Office-file or a pdf. For IE users there is a version available under the name of KallOut which used to be the name for the Firefox application too With this Firefox Addon it is possible to save websites. What seems to be a screenshot at first sight is fully functioning with the links intact. What is more is that portions of sites can be saved this way, also web-service forms with inserted data, like a catalogue entry or a train schedule. Also sections from composite displays can be separately saved this way. The resulting scrap can be edited as well. At first sight: the homepage of a softwarefirm which designs Search Engines to their customers' requirements, upon looking closer: in their "Featured Sites" the gateway to some of the world's most exhaustive Sci/Tech search portals. Affords the creation of charts in four different modes of display; also works with pasting Columns from Excel spreadsheets. The resulting charts can be saved one one's own harddisk.
