WEB CROPS WEEKLY

2009 Calender Week 48, November 23rd

This site lists the Internet resources, software, search engines etc. which the author finds the most useful. The idea is to present with a short description only the arguably very best findings in various categories. The criteria for inclusion are:

  • Usability

  • Free availability (only freeware, where downloads are concerned)

  • Ease of handling (no IT expertise required)

The Internet will be continuously monitored for new developments, but of the hundreds of findings within a week only a few, if none at all for individual weeks may be included here.

This week's crops:

Type: Firefox Addon Type: Firefox Addon Type: Online Database Type: Bookmarklet Type: Search Engine
Minimap DownThemAll FreeBookSpot Google Scholar BioMed Search Bookmarklet Microsoft Acedemic Search
This Firefox Addon allows the display of a map upon highlighting an address on a webpage. And this is not just one type of map, one can choose from a selection of most interactive maps. In addition various tools for storage, export and more are available. With this Firefox Addon it is possible to download various kinds of files, for example images as one selects. Settings can make the process very convenient, once a routine is acquired. Here freely available e-books can be downloaded. One does not have to register, despite being encouraged. THe download links lead to sites like rapidshare, where again an encouragement to opt for a payable premium version is made. It works without all that, except where copyright prevents. There again an offer to buy is made. Drag this bookmarklet to your Bookmarks Toolbar and open it as a search box for Google Scholar advanced search in the fields of Biology, Life Sciences, and Environmental Science as well as Medicine, Pharmacology, and Veterinary Science. Alternatively you can highlight a keyword anywhere on a webpage and click on the bookmarklet. The bookmarklet is configured to return 50 hits per page. It might be a good idea to shorten the name of the bookmarklet after installation on the toolbar. Microsoft had closed Windows Live Academic for whatever reason several months ago. Now a revival in shape of this SE has taken place. It looks stronger than before and of course is a competitor to GoogleScholar.
