This site lists the Internet resources, software, search engines etc. which the author finds the most useful. The idea is to present with a short description only the arguably very best findings in various categories. The criteria for inclusion are:

  • Usability


  • Free availability (only freeware, where downloads are concerned)


  • Ease of handling (no IT expertise required)

The Internet will be continuously monitored for new developments, but of the hundreds of findings within a week only a few, if none at all for individual weeks may be included here.

A comprehensive searchable database which offers "a massive central data source and a handy way to graphically compare nations. NationMaster is a vast compilation of data from such sources as the CIA World Factbook, UN, and OECD." It covers practically all details of public life. The Digital Repository Infrastructure Vision for European Research is a portal for academic full texts, to a large extent dissertations Firefox Addon which will indicate the liveliness of links on a page in green or red. A directory with maps to public transportation (Underground, City Trains) in 100 + cities around the world. This is a virtual planetarium, one of the many and one of the best: easy to handle, no scientific background needed
