WEB CROPS WEEKLY

2010 Calender Week 10, March 1st

This site lists the Internet resources, software, search engines etc. which the author finds the most useful. The idea is to present with a short description only the arguably very best findings in various categories. The criteria for inclusion are:

  • Usability

  • Free availability (only freeware, where downloads are concerned)

  • Ease of handling (no IT expertise required)

The Internet will be continuously monitored for new developments, but of the hundreds of findings within a week only a few, if none at all for individual weeks may be included here.

This week's crops:

Type: Website Type: Website / Search Engine Type: Website Index Type: Special Search Engine Type: Online Tool
Relativity visualized - Space Time Travel Book Download Library Card Catalog List of National Archives Buzzzy.com Calais Viewer
Here are visualisations of relativity to be seen, for example a trip through the old part of Tuebingen where these visualisations were conceived, at close to the speed of light. There would be certain mathematical requirements for a deeper understanding of the material presented, but it can also be taken as a phenomenal collection and may inspire further interest. Contrary to its title this site is an online Website / SE / Database for downloadable fulltexts of books. The Gutenberg entries seem to have undergone some changes and are therefore not immediately accessible. It is hoped that these changes will be considered soon. This Wiki directory lists the national archives of the world with links. This Search Engine, not only for Buzz, but a considerable number more, will give realtime results for most (latest) topics on the web. The viewer is really only a demo version of what is available inside the Open Calais by Thomson Reuters. Even this version fulfills the task of text mining to a level of satisfaction. For example one could submit an abstract taken from a journal's home page and have it semantically analyzed. This would be a perfect basis to decide upon to which extent the article covers one's own interest. Also, if one is writing an abstract for submission as a conference paper for example, a previous analysis with the Calais viewer would ensure that a good balance of important key words was achieved or still has to be worked on.
