WEB CROPS WEEKLY

2010 Calender Week 6, February 8th

This site lists the Internet resources, software, search engines etc. which the author finds the most useful. The idea is to present with a short description only the arguably very best findings in various categories. The criteria for inclusion are:

  • Usability

  • Free availability (only freeware, where downloads are concerned)

  • Ease of handling (no IT expertise required)

The Internet will be continuously monitored for new developments, but of the hundreds of findings within a week only a few, if none at all for individual weeks may be included here.

This week's crops:

Type: Software Type: Search Engine Type: Search Engine Type: Online Tool Type: Internet Site + Search Engine
WhatInStartup Insider Arts Museum TinEye - Reverse Image Search Engine Goformat.com - Free Text Formatting Tools Encyclopedia of Life
Starting a PC sometimes seems to last forever. This is more often than not caused by a number of software applications which are by default or by choice in the startup settings. The layperson will have trouble locating the respective entries and then deleting them. WhatInStartup displays a menu where one only has to press a little red button to have the program removed from the startup settings. Art and art related topics can be found with the help of this SE which is powered by an impressive list of 49 world arts museums. Searching for an image one already has located does not seem to make sense at first. However, searching for the exact URL of that image will result in other URLs where it can be found, perhaps in better resolution. Also diverting from the suggested path once the URL is selected, it may be shortened to a domain name or one level lower and entered into a Google image search (only Google images searchwill yield results for domains or subdomains) and then similar images may be obtained. Italso has several plugings for different browsers to offer in the plugin submenu. Most all of us have encountered the situation where "copy" from webpages and "paste" to a text editor or MS WORD etc. led to results which had to be laargely rewritten. Goformat provides a textbox into which a copied portion of text may be pasted. Then it can be changed with command buttons "Capitalize Sentences", "Capitalize Words" "Uppercase All" and "Lowercase All". In addition a replacement tool is there and another one to erase all punctuation and functional characters. The Encyclopedia of Life has an open access section and a members' section where one can create one's own account. The contents comes from 51 institutional members as well as from individuals. The goal is: "The Encyclopedia will be an online reference and database on all 1.9 million species currently known to science and will stay current by capturing information on newly discovered and formally described species. The Encyclopedia of Life will help all of us better understand life on our planet." The site has interfaces for 6 major languages.
