2010 Calender Week 12, March 15th

This site lists the Internet resources, software, search engines etc. which the author finds the most useful. The idea is to present with a short description only the arguably very best findings in various categories. The criteria for inclusion are:

  • Usability


  • Free availability (only freeware, where downloads are concerned)


  • Ease of handling (no IT expertise required)

The Internet will be continuously monitored for new developments, but of the hundreds of findings within a week only a few, if none at all for individual weeks may be included here.

The UNESCO World Heritage List "includes 890 properties forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. These include 689 cultural [Cultural site] , 176 natural [Natural site] and 25 mixed [Mixed site] properties in 148 States Parties. As of April 2009, 186 States Parties have ratified the World Heritage Convention." Every single site is linked to a separate page with description, maps, documents, gallery and more. External links are also given. PDF for the longest time could only be edited with the Adobe Acrobat Pro software or its forerunners. The next cheap alternative was to convert a PDF file to WORD or RTF and edit it and then reconvert it to PDF. Now with OCR PDF being available it is possible to edit a PDF File upon a quick, quite unnoticeable, OCR procedure and then save it. This freeware is easy to handle, fast and very effective. A site containing practically every aspect on birds, suited for the hobby birdwatcher as well as for the ornithologist, it has interfaces to 17 languages plus one artificial language. This editor works on on the JAVA Runtime Environment. Flowcharts for many topics can be created by dragging graphic elements from a library to the editor. It can be used for computer related purposes, offering hard- and software symbols, as well as for creating family trees. Free Audio Recorder wiil prove useful for recording ones own soundfiles. It "can capture various sound input to WAV, MP3 WMA and OGG audio formats. The audio recording utility is capable of recording from CD player, line in, microphone, internet radio, tape cassette..." It may also be used to digitize LPs and turn them into CDs.
